Filter Persistence

Since we went live with XF, I've had requests to allow the thread list filter to be changed such that it's persistent. I'm referring to these filters:



People are more comfortable selecting First message when they view the forums. Is there any way to allow this setting to remain persistent rather than them setting it and having it revert back when they browse to another forum or do I need to create an addon to make this a user selectable default?
