I thought these two skills should be related as follows:
First of all, in the Carpentry Skill I would add different rarities to the decorations, depending on the cost of crafting them (The event ones, given by the Sloth in the Hub should be kept in common to not give great advantages to players with a range).
Then if you keep your island decorated, different NPCs should come to visit which would give you Social XP. Maybe go changing decorations from time to time to give it some more...
